Stanley Washington Obituary

Mr. Stanley Joseph Washington, 78, of Columbia, South Carolina, will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church 1908 Wilkinson Street Cayce, South Carolina, burial will be held at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens 2603 Two Notch Road Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Washington will lie-instate at the church on Thursday, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. and the family will be having a repast at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church fellowship Hall, after the burial. Mr. Washington  was born
to the late Samuel “Bubba” Washington, Sr. and Minnie-Idella Chavis
Washington on November 8, 1945 in Lexington County. He departed this
earthly life and gained his heavenly wings to be with his Lord and Savior on
August 13, 2024 in Richland County.
Stanley attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Cayce, SC, and was baptized at
an early age. Stanley was a longstanding and faithful member of Mt. Zion
for many years.
Stanley was educated in the public schools of Lexington County, South
Carolina, and graduated from Lakeview High School 1964, where he was a
“stand-out” Football Player for the Mighty Lakeview Tigers! He became one
of the most notable, remembered, and emulated figures in Lakeview High
School history. He was affectionately known as “The Stanley Steamer”
because of his dynamic moves on the football field. Stanley was well
recognized for his athletic abilities and was a leading scorer for the football
team. Stanley received accolades that few high school athletes ever
achieve leading Lakeview High School to the State Championship in the
Class AA Division, as a Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. Stanley also
played basketball for Lakeview High School his Junior and Senior years.
The 1962 Basketball Team won the Class AA State Championship. Stanley
received multiple scholarship offers from many prominent collegiate
institutions. He ultimately furthered his athletic and academic career at
Allen University in Columbia, SC on a football scholarship. He also played
Baseball for the Cayce Red Sox.
After 31 years of dedicated service, Stanley retired as a Truck Driver from
International Paper Company.
Stanley was an Avid Bowler and was a member of many championship
teams. He received 5 rings for bowling perfect games. Bowling with his
friends and family members brought him great joy.  

Stanley was featured on WLTX, as he was well known in the Benedict
College Tailgate Community as a Master Griller. He was also known for
entertaining guests at social engagements by providing Disc-Jockey
services for parties, banquets and weddings with his digitized music.
Family was the highlight of Stanley life! Being a husband, father,
grandfather, Papi, brother, uncle, or cousin was the best part of his
existence. He had the delight of having family here and around the world.
Attending the bi-annnual Washington Family Reunions were special
moments to celebrate and connect with his family!
In addition to his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by sisters, Pastor Mazie
Motes, Eloise Atkins, Iline Corley, and Ruden Myers; and brother, Samuel
Washington Jr.
He is survived and cherished by his wife of 31 years, Valerie S.
Washington of the home, daughter, Carmen Washington (H. Antonio
Goggans) of Newberry, SC, special son Juan Tillman of Bowie, MD; one
grandson Corley Byers of Columbia, SC, and three great grandchildren,
Corlen, Je-Siya, and Kamira Byers of Columbia, SC, three sisters, Leola
Washington Rice and Marian Washington Counts of Columbia, SC, and
Jackie Washington Bacon of Indiana; one brother, Dennis Earle of
Columbia SC; two goddaughters, LaJuanya Jones and Denise Earle
Gibson of Columbia, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and caring friends who
loved him dearly.
