Graveside services for Mrs. Matilda English Porterfield, 68, of 1120 Valley Ridge Road, Gaston, South Carolina will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am September 23, 2021 at the Greater St. Paul A.M.E. Church Cemetery 662 Old Wire Road West Columbia, South Carolina, There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 12:00 to 7:00 pm at the Pearson's Funeral Home 4508 N. Main Street Columbia, South Carolina.She departed this life peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2021, at the Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Matilda was affectionately known to her friends as "Piney". Born in Lexington County, South Carolina on January 13, 1953, she was the youngest and ninth child of the late Abram C. and Victoria Foster English. Matilda was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Vernelle (the late Joe) Smith; and Geneva (the late Willie) Robinson; brothers, Rev Abram C. English, Jr., and Roosevelt English; infant grandson, Sheldon A. English; and infant great grandson, Brayden A. Shaheed. Matilda attended grade school at Lakeview High School in West Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from Airport High School in Lexington School District Two. She attended Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College and earned certified nursing assistant certification. Matilda was employed as a nurse technician for many years and private duty home health caregiver. Her employment included Richland Memorial Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Three Rivers Behavioral Health, and South Carolina Mental Health Facility. Matilda was a talented vocalist and lead singer in the Choir at Greater St. Paul A.M.E. Church. She enjoyed making others happy with delicious meals, endearing encouragement, and pleasant smile. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ms. Porterfield joined Greater St. Paul A.M.E. Church in her youth where she received Jesus as her Savior and served there faithfully. Ms. Matilda English Porterfield leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Amelia (Corinth) Hodges of Columbia, SC; Angel (Brian) Rivers of Gaston, SC; son Clifton S. Porterfield of SC; and a step daughter, and six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren,; three brothers, Henry (Lenora) English, Sr., Rev. Joseph (Janis) English, and Melvin English all of Gaston, SC; one sister, Cedelle (James) Gates of West Columbia, SC; nieces, nephews; sisters-in-law, Rosemary English of Aiken, SC and Margaret English of Gaston, SC; many loving relatives, and dear friends ( and Clifton Porterfield) all of whom join the family in rejoicing that she is with the Lord.
