Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Ann Hawkins 71, of 1814 Over Hill Road Columbia, SC will be held on Saturday April April 25 2020 at the Pearson's Funeral Home-Chapel with burial in the St. James Baptist Church Cemetery West Columbia, SC. How do we start this and where do we begin to tell everyone about this woman that could have been your mother, sister aunt and best friend. On September 20 1948, many were around to witness the birth of the greatest woman to walk this earth. Martha Ann Hawkins was a blessing born to Beatrice McDaniels and Leroy Williams in Lexington, SC She grew up with two sisters and one brother. Martha Ann was educated in the public schools in South Carolina. She was ahead of her time, that at the age of 11, she taught her crush, Larry Hawkins who later became her husband how to french kiss.They have been together since then. Married at a young age became the parents of #1 Latonjia and #2 Sha. In 1969 they moved to New York City. Larry was the labor and Martha did what she did best-EXCEL.She went from being a housewife then a mother then a graduate of Medgar Evers College. She worked as a sales clerk, manager, and a bartender. In between her jobs, she and larry had #3 Rashid and #4 Dwayne. She called her children by numbers because sometimes could not remember there names. In the 1990s the Hawkins relocated back to Columbia, SC . Martha Ann started volunteering and working odd jobs. Martha Ann enjoyed swimming, eating, shooting pool and playing cards.Do not be fool by her sweet demeanor, she was at time setting you up.so she can say that you don't no part of me.Growing up in South Carolina she made many friends, but her friends from the beginning to the end were her parents, sparring partners and most important her siblings. Her sisters, Louise Garvin and Geneva Pringleare patiently waiting at the gate for her and asking their mama, "Why is Martha Ann always late? Martha Ann had to be matching from head to toe and even her hair had to be in place under a hat.`Martha Ann was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother and a friend to all. She was always full of life, sarcasm and sly remarks but she was fierce and outspoken. Martha Ann leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving husband of over 50 years, Larry Hawkins of Columbia, SC; her great aunt Annie Lou Samuels;her brother Prince (Francine) O'Neal; her children; daughter Latonjia Hawkins of Brooklyn, NY; Son's Larry Sha Hawkins of Columbia; Rashid Maleek Hawkins of Brooklyn, NYand Dwayne Edward Hawkins of Columbis; her adopted daughter; Lakeisha Ramsey, ten grandchildren and and six great grandchildren and two sister-in-laws and three brother-in-laws and a host of other relatives and friends.
