Born in Lexington County the son of the late Mr. Eugene Grant and Mrs. Agnes Irons Grant . Eugene and Agnes Grant joyfully welcomed their seventh child, James Solomon Grant, into the world on September 3, 1943. "Dobby" , (Nickname given to him by his oldest brother Eugene) grew up in Cayce, South Carolina, alongside his his seven siblings: Eugene Grant II, Eva Mae West, Lanese McNeal, Roosevelt Grant, Lewis Grant, and Lucinda Grant, all of whom have sadly passed away before him. James graduated from Lakeview High School in 1961, his hobbies included sports, and he aspired to become a brick mason. After finishing school, he chose to enlist in the Marines. He took great pride in the skills he acquired and the time he dedicated to serving his country. Upon returning home, he briefly worked for the U.S. Postal Service before creating a career with the New York Transit System. James had a passion for working with his hands and was adept at fixing nearly anything. He was a self taught plumber. Anything he did know, he learned from books. He was truly a handyman." It was during the time that he met the love of his life, Elmonia, and they became inseparable. They lived in New York for many years and relocated to Columbia, South Carolina so that James could fulfill a dream and commitment he made to God before he left Cayce. His mission was to restore the church his family attended for many generations. He restored the church and built a fellowship hall. He accomplished his goal. He kept his word. James was survived by his devoted wife Elmonia with whom he shared 54 wonderful years, their daughter Nena Hardy, son-in-law Quentin Hardy, and two grandsons, Quentin Hardy II and Qai Hardy and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
