Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Naomi Glover Davis 92, 4509 Williamsburg Drive Columbia, SC, will be held on Wednesday August 19, 2020 at 11:00 am in the First Calvary Baptist Church 1401 Pine Street Columbia, SC, with burial to follow at the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery 4170 Percival Road Columbia, SC,. For those who knew and loved her dearly she was simply "Yaya" Dorthy Naomi Glover Davis was born September 25, 1927, in Columbia, South Carolina to Albert and Bertha Glover. As the youngest of four siblings, the story retold at family gathering is that her sister Gladys asked the mailman to bring her a little sister, and he did. Dorthy attended public schools of Richland County and graduated in 1944 from Booker T. Washington High School. After high school graduation, Dorthy attended South Carolina State College with a band scholarship, graduating in 1948 with a B.S. in Education. She did additional graduate studies at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. In 1949, Dorothy married the love of her life, the late Deacon Emeritus, Wilson J. "Dub" Davis, and to this union a daughter, Sandra, and son Gregory were born. Dorothy taught elementary, middle, and high school in Richland County School District 1 for 37 years, retiring as a Reading Consultant for the district.Dorothy was a very faithful lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church, serving as a past member of the Madrigals Choir, President of the Pulpit Aid Club, Deaconess Ministry, Fruit of Spirit Ministry, and Art Assistant for Vacation Bible School. In April 2017, Dorothy was awarded the North Minister Presbyterian Church in recognition of her faith journey and fruits of the spirit; patience, joy, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, self-control, peace and love. Yaya was a very talented artist and many family homes are decorated with her creations. Sharing her artistic expertise with others, she taught senior citizens art classes in a program sponsored by the City of Columbia,. Dorothy was also an avid bridge playerfor more than 50 years with the "Les June Bridgettes." Yaya always made her home the place to be for family gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Left to cherish these precious memoriesare: one daughter, Sandra Davis McKie, of Columbia, SC; one son, Gregory Wilson Davis(Michaele) of Loganville, PA; three granddaughters, Sharra Burkes Simmons of Charlotte, NC, Jarryd L. Mckie-Jacobs (Derick) of Columbia, SC, and Morgan Camille Davis, Esq. of Harrisburg, PA; three great granddaughters, Loahan Burkes of Charlotte, NC, Yvonne Mckie-Jacobs and Naomi Malissia Jacobs of Columbia, SC; a very dear niece Dr. Curtina Moreland-Young of Jackson, MS., a very special cousin Sandra Wesley of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other will miss her dearly.family and friends who
