For those who knew and loved her dearly she was simply "Yaya!" Dorothy Naomi Glover Davis was born September 25 1927, in Columbia, South Carolina to Albert and Bertha Bellinger Glover. As the youngest of four siblings, the story retold at the family gatherings is that her sister Gladys asked the mailman to bring her a little sister, and he did! Dorothy attended the public schools of Richland County and graduated in 1944 from Booker T. Washington High School. After high school graduation, Dorothy attended South Carolina State College with a band scholarship, graduating in 1948 with a B.S. in Education. She did additional graduate studies at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. In 1949, Dorthy married the love of her life the late Deacon Emeritus, Wilson J. "Dob" Davis, and to this union a daughter, Sandra, and son, Gregory were born. Dorothy taught elementary, middle, and high school in Richland County District 1 for 37 years, retiring as a reading consultant for the district. Dorothy was a very faithful lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church, serving as a past member of the Madrigals Choir, President of the Pulpit Aid Club, the Deaconess Ministry, Fruit of the Spirit Ministry, and Art Assistant for Vacation Bible School. In April 2017, Dorothy was awarded the Woman of Faith Award by the North Minister Presbyterian Church in recognition of her faith journey and fruit of Spirit: patience, joy, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, self-control, peace and love. Yaya was a very Talented artist and many family homes are decorated with her creations. Sharing her artistic expertise with others, she taught senior citizens art classes in the program sponsored by the City of Columbia. Dorothy was also an avid bridge player for more than 50 years with the "Les Junes Bridgettes." Yaya always made her home the place to be for family gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
